Sewing Wild Oats Video

My scrappy journal isn't complete without lots of writing and photos but the sewing is done and it's been sewn into it's cover. I took advantage of a long sun break to set up a video station and shoot my first video. There's no music, no voice over, and only the sound of the pages but I did it with my little point and shoot camera's movie setting. Now that I know how I'll add more to my blog in the future. I hope you enjoy seeing the journal.

  4. It's a wonderful journal Jo! I smiled at your 'wild oats' label sewn onto the cover. I love the pairing of the old-fashioned lady portrait with the black and white doily photo beneath it. The sound of the pages crinkling is music to me. :)

  5. Okay, this is my hands-down favorite of all of the videos in the class, and not talking is one reason why. Just showing your awesome work accented its magnificance. LOVE EVERY PAGE. Wishing I could copy every page. I may just use yours as my mentor work. Thank you so much for making this and your journal. xoxo, Aimeslee

  6. Jo,
this is a wonderful book. i noticed, i think, that you said you make pillowcases for family. my mom does that and i love them. i loved the group picture that looked like it was printed on a transparency. i loved the clothing labels. i collect those, too. and the paper doll dress is absolute genius!

and the keeping a journal video in the previous entry brought tears to my eyes.

  16. Manon and Melissa and Cindy, I believe in journals that contain the unique information that comes from ones life… I’ve sewn all my life so using the machine and fabric just makes good sense, and the school pictures were from my huge old college yearbook, and there’s lots of bits of paintings and collages.

Thanks for mentioning the sound of the pages turning, Diana. It adds another dimension and I’ll be purposeful about it in future work.

Aimeslee, you’re welcome to use my ideas to guide your own work. If I can help, be sure to ask.

Juliet, the group picture WAS printed on a transparency. It’s been hanging around for years and I was glad to find a place for it. I’d love to find some old paper dolls to use. I clearly remember walking up the hill to my friend Betty’s house with my cigar box full of paper dolls and their clothes when I was about 11 to play paper dolls with her. Thanks for the compliment.

Diane, if you start a journal and keep it up for 6 months I’ll send you a little surprise reward. Keep in touch. There’s nothing I like better than inspiring a budding artist.

Stacey! It’s so good to hear from you!

Viki, I’m glad to hear that you like my layers and surprises. That’s so fun.

So Brian… get yourself a machine and go for it. Some of the best sewers are men.

And you all need to know that the stenciled paper on the page with the 4 old fashioned ladies was from an mail art piece of stenciling that Roben-Marie sent me. I use everything!

Oh boy, Mary Ann. You made my day with your compliments. It’s so nice when the teacher gives you an A.

  20. Jo...I am signing up for RoftheD class and took a look at your book here. Those 'yearbook' shots of the young girls cracked me up. I don't know about you, but I could have been one of them pictured. Just my era.
